Television and stand created for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Spring 2020 at Diablo Valley College. Directed by Will Springhorn. Scenic design by Carrie Mullen.

This was a collaborative effort. The television and stand could not be taller than 36" altogether. The prop TV from storage could not be physically altered. The TV stand needed to be able to hold a hidden working speaker inside, and it needed to be rollable. With these restrictions, I gathered research images from the 1950's and 1960's and decided to create a shell over the existing TV in order to make it look older while still utilizing the glass screen.

Research images gathered of television sets from the 1950's – 1960's. I presented these to the scenic designer and she created a rough rendering of how to go about building the TV shell and stand. Then, I communicated these images and ideas to the props artisans who worked on creating the shell. Due to our varying schedules, we couldn't all be in the workshop at the same time and primarily communicated through email and text, taking turns working on the build.

Process images including the stock TV we created the shell and stand for. While the props artisans, Aissa Simbulan and Sian Marshall, primarily worked on the TV shell, I primarily built the TV stand. I also worked with the sound designer to ensure his hidden speaker would be able to fit inside the stand.

The final TV & stand on stage during the one and only tech rehearsal. Unfortunately, the show was cancelled due to COVID-19 shutdowns.
